Here I am surfing at Kelly Ave in HMB. It was small and kind of fun.

You can see me drop in on a friend, Tyson, near the end. And the last three shots are of Ed who has pics and stuff in other posts.

Oh, and I made the music a while back and though it would work out okay for this video. Seems to sync up pretty well though I probably could have made some better edits. But even that wouldn't have help my lack of skills or ugly mug being front and center in 3D -:]

3D GoPro Testing

Testing out my new 3D GoPro setup. This is actually the 2nd time I've taken it out but only my first post. Will try and get some more shots up at some point. Unfortunately both times I took the camera out waves were not so good and the sky was pretty gray. Testing out some re-timing here as well. Gets a bit swimy in the super slow motion bit. Eh, kind of fun any way.

Haven't posted in a while. Haven't been surfing as much as I should so instead of taking pictures or using video rigs I've been trying to focus on surfing. This past Thursday I lucked out and saw someone taking photos of us from the shore. When I got out I went over and met Dave Elkinson who was kind enough to send me the photos he took of us. Thanks Dave!

Here is Todd Jansen making a bottom turn. Todd is the latest addition to the PDI dawn patrol though I think he's been surfing with us since he started at PDI a few years ago. I just haven't post any pictures of him till now.

Mavericks First Big Swell of the Season

Here is the janky ass video I shot of Mavericks. I didn't have any video tapes for my stereo 3d rig so I shot this with my point and shoot. You can see the rig below. Anyway it was fun to get out and watch the first big swell of the season!

This is the view from where I was standing. This is at the top of a 40-50 foot is cliff and is probably one of the best spots you can watch from short of being in the water. That wave in the middle top which is the farthest out is the break. There is actually someone riding it and if you click to view the bigger image you can almost make them out but probably not. The guy there in front of me had a huge lens.

Here is what that barbed wire fence protects. It's some kind of Navy installation. I think mostly weather and radar stuff. It has the prime spot for watching Mavericks and normal people are not aloud in.

Here is the top of the cliff. In this picture you can see just about all of the top of the cliff that you can watch from. I was standing along the very steep back side of the cliff. Not a whole lot of room for spectators. I think only 10-20 cameras could get a good view or maybe 30-40 people.

Here a view from the same spot looking down. It's a pretty steep climb as you can see from the guy making his way up. There are some spots along that edge you can watch from but they are not so comfy and less than the best view.

This is they guy who was in front of me with his huge lens. I bet he got better shots than me.

Here is the super cheap and small gheto lens extender rig I took with me. It's why my video is less than super. The clamp thing cost $20 from B&H Photo and totally worth it for lo-tech video. Though my rig is cheap and less than perfect I actually really enjoy the janky quality of the video I shoot with it.

All hooked up and ready to go. I hand held all of my shots and had to do a lot of post deshake to make it kind of watchable.

This is the end I spend most of my time looking at.

Fun at the Jetty

Got to the Jetty early and had plenty of time to surf thanks to the fall back.

Here is a mid size wave from this morning. There were bigger and smaller waves and most of them were clean and fun.

Shot this video. Just about everyone ended up getting caught inside when the set came through so I didn't really capture the magic that was happening here today but the video was okay so I put it up.

Bioluminescent Birthday!

So it's my birthday and I headed out for a birthday dawn patrol. Everyone bailed on me but being my birthday I wasn't going to let that stop me today. I hit the place I most wanted to surf and ended up getting there a little before sunrise. I was watching for waves and noticed that the bigger sets (which weren't very big, maybe waist) seemed to be greenish. I thought it was from a stop light down the road. But it was the wrong color green and the light was pretty far away. Then I noticed it was actually in the wave not reflecting off it. The waves white water was still white in the light but there was a green glow inside the bigger waves. It looked like a green lighting storm inside the waves as they broke. The smaller waves didn't glow or at least not enough for me to see. It was starting to get light so it was probably washing most of the glowing out. I bet it looked really cool about an hour before I got there. Still It was a great birthday present from mother nature. I only had my phone camera on me which wouldn't have come close to capturing it so no pictures. Sorry.

Little Clean OBX Wave

I was back east in the Outer Banks, NC for my yearly week long family vacation. Surfed every day except the day we arrived at 8pm and the day we left at 6am. Mostly knee high waves with a few in the waist maybe higher but pretty clean and fun enough.

This was my only successful attempt at getting a shot of a tiny barrel.

Sweet South Swell - July 25

It was a bit bigger today with the bigger sets in the at least double over head size. I have a sore elbow and only managed two waves before I got rolled a few times and decided to call it quits while I was ahead.

I have been taking the worst pictures this weekend but at least I was taking pictures!. At least they are in 3D! Even if they are in pretty flat/shallow 3d. I need to take my hyper stereo bar out with me so I can get more depth. Oh well.

This was the biggest wave I managed to get a picture of. How big does this look? 2x over head? It wasn't the biggest one we saw but it was the biggest anyone caught while I had my camera out. When I was getting out of the water I saw a guy gut a huge stand up barrel with room to spare and it was about the same size as this wave.

Sweet South Swell - July 24

The surf has been pretty good the last few days and here is some proof. I wish I could have managed some better pictures but I think these show off the waves well enough. I would have shot video but I decided to spend more time surfing than worrying about taking pictures or video since I haven't been out on a day this good and bit in over a year thanks to my knee injury(s).

So if I was from over the hill and there had been good surf and a crowd and I was dropping in on people and all that I might have a little sympathy. But the surf was just kind of okayish maybe and me and a friend were the only ones in the water the whole time we were out at Kelly Ave / Have Moon Bay State Park. So I am guessing they were just jealous of my super awesome big puffy side burns.

And how can you not be!

Right? If you saw these you would probably want to write me secret love notes too. Did I mention that they didn't stick around to chat about my lack of surf skillz (I was in the water catching waves, where were they?) or my burns or my fat wanna be a sumo wrestler physique? Maybe I'll post something in the missed connections section of the HMB paper.

3D Fathers Day Solstice Skate

What better way to celebrate the longest day of the year than with a Fathers Day Summer Solstice Skate! This was my first fathers day without my Dad. And I was a little extra sad because Dad always got so excited about the Solstice. He loved the longest day (well day light) of the year. I needed something to cheer me up. So I went Skating with Eli and his stepson Steven -:]

Here is Steven working on his hospital flip. I think there is a varial flip in there as well.

The stereo is a little out of sync but it mostly works. I need to bring a better video rig next time.

Here I am doing a frontside air. I needed to do some flying in honor of Dad -:]

I tried to get my frontside on video but I guess the pressure got to me because I didn't quite make it. Still the air is pretty clean and I think the video is kind of funny.

I like this picture because you can tell it's not a 2 foot section I'm airing in.

Sick Sea Lion(s) -:[

Some friends (Eli and Todd) and I were meeting up to surf this morning. I stopped at one spot around 5:30 am to check it and it was looking pretty bad so I called Eli who was driving buy another spot that I thought might be good (it was) and said he should stop there instead of meeting up with me since where I was sucked. Then I left to check another spot on my way to meet up with Eli and Todd. When I was checking the other spot Eli called and said there was a sea lion on the rocks that looked sick and asked if I had the Marine Mammal Rescue number. He thought I had it because two weeks ago we saw another sick sea lion and I called the Marine Mammal Rescue. I gave him the number so he could call it in. When I got there this little guy was laying on the rocks not looking so good.

He was looking pretty sad but was still kicking and managed to keep an eye on everyone checking him out.

Right as we finished up surfing and got out of the water one of the local Marine Mammal Rescue people showed up to get the little guy. She had a BIG net and that got him all excited but not that much. She caught him with very little effort.

Poor little guy stuck in jail. I hope he pulls through.

So this is the 2nd sick sea lion pup we have seen in two weeks. When I called the first one in the guy I talked to said there have been a lot of sick sea lion pups this year. He said they think the sea lions are having a hard time finding food. The Marine rescue lady was telling Eli the same thing. Bummer.

Whale Tale

Went out surfing with some friends Wednesday morning before work at Kelly Ave in Half Moon Bay. The waves were so-so. A few fun waves but nothing to exciting going on. I was paddling back out after catching a little ride and one friend, Adam, was pointing at our other friend, Ed, who was 20-30 yards away and I thought I heard Adam say, "whale".

I paddle over to him and ask, "Did you say whale?"

He said, "Yeah, right over by Ed."

I looked over and sure enough there as a whale about 20 feet from Ed but a little closer to shore than we were. As we watched it looked like there were two of them, a bigger one and a smaller one. We figured it was probably a mother and calf. Oh and by smaller it was still huge. The part we saw was 15ish feet of it's back which probably put it in the 20+ foot range and the other one was bigger. They ended up swimming around us keeping about 20-3o yards away gently surfacing and blowing out of their spouts but not really splashing much. Once they were around us the moved in closer to shore again and seemed to keep heading up the beach. I think as we were leaving they swam back by but further out looking like they were heading back out to sea.

To top it off the night before I was thinking about taking one of my water proof cameras out but decided I would rather focus on surfing which is why there are no pictures of whales but I figured I had to post this story.

I have never seen a whale before let alone been sitting in the water right by them. It was crazy cool. Probably the coolest things I have ever seen.

I Heart Pads!

I have a big fat scab on my knee now and that was with two inch pads! I don't want to think about what my knee would have looked like without pads -:\

Skate Junk

I almost grabbed this stuff. Then I figured I already have enough skate junk of my own.

I actually saw it last week. When we walked by the same place this week the wheels and truck were still there. Funny because those are the things that seemed most useful. The deck was for sure soggy and just about worthless. Diffrent stroks for diffrent folks I guess.

Skate Week

My friend Mike who I have been skating with since 9th grade, some 23ish years now, was in town this past week. We mostly skated and took pictures and video of skating.

Here is Mike busting an ollie over a recycle bin at the Menlo Park Skate Park.

And here he is holding on to the picture frame to help him land this rail slide.

Here is Steven busting an ollie over the same recycle bin.

At the Pacifica Skate Park we met this kid named Shane who was tearing it up. That's Mike taking a picture.

Shane kept doing these big ollies out of the bowl and onto this platform. He was pulling all kinds of grabs and 180s and stuff.

You can see how big the ollie is better from this angle.

At Menlo Park there was a biker pulling some nice airs.

I like this shot a lot but it's not as 3d as the first one of him.

The Jetty looked unsurfable this morning. On my drive home it looked a little better.

Though it was pretty much breaking right on the beach -:\

Gray Whale Cove always looks cool though the waves looked a little disorganized today. They look kind of small but my guess is they were easily head+.

The waves ended up being pretty fun this morning.

Here is my buddy Eli who I surf with most of the time. I saw him get at least one wave better than this one but I didn't have my camera out.

Ed caught the most waves and had the best rides. He has also been surfing for a lot longer than us kooks. I only managed to score 2 decent rides today but that's better than some days I've had so I can't complain too much.

Surfers Beach / The Jetty @ Low Tide

This is one of my favorite surf spots at low tide. Normally those rocks in the middle of the picture are mostly under water. It is odd to see them mostly high and dry. It's also good to see them like this every once in a while so you know what is going on under you because a lot of the time the best waves roll right over them. Some times there are more rocks exposed. I think this is the most buried in sand I have seem them. Click to see a bigger version. Stereo 3D helmet cam

I put this together this water proof stereo 3d helmet cam about 8 months ago. The day after I made it I took it for a test run at one of the local skate spots. After I had tested it out and found that it was really comfortable I set it aside and started skating. About 1o minutes later I tore my ACL. It has been sitting in a bin at my place for the last 8 months. I hope to take it out in the next few weeks now that I am surfing again.

Of course these pics are in 3d!

You can see the two digital recorders and the camel-back I put them in. The camel-back makes for a nice really small back pack which is almost unnoticeable when you are wearing it.

Took a still camera out

I have been surfing a little but not posting pictures. I have been trying to get my arms back after spending the better part of the last 7 months out of the water recovering from my ACL reconstruction. I figure a camera will only distract me from surfing so I have intentionally not taken any out. For some reason I thought it would be okay this past Thursday.

Here is my usual surf comrade Eli paddling out. As you can see it was not a hard paddle.

There were some waves but mostly it was just a pretty and cold morning with a nice moon set.

There were long periods of waiting and getting cold. You can't tell from this picture but the wind was really strong and Eli was freezing without a hood.

I shot some movies and none of them came out. I shot a ride or two and none of the pictures came out. I missed a lot of waves while trying to take pictures of waves. I am not taking my still camera back out till I have a better system worked out or I get my arms back and have more than a couple of hours in the water.

6 months out of the water, 5 months after my left knee ACL reconstruction surgery and I got the go-ahead from my Doc to resume normal activities such as surfing. YEAH! And check it out the surf is good!

Don't forget to get out those red/blue glasses because a lot of these are in 3D. If you click on them you can see them bigger too.

Today was actually my 2nd day back in the water. I got an AM surf in on Friday before work and didn't have time to take any pictures. My surf session got cut a little short today (I'll explain later) so I went and grabbed my cameras to take some pictures.

That is ED. I work with ED. Sometimes I surf with Ed too. We headed out to O.B. together today. His surf session wasn't cut short but by the time I got back with my cameras to take some pics of him surfing he was just getting out.

Ed makes boards for himself from time to time. That's one of them there. I had a chance to ride it before breaking my knee. It's a fun board.

So here is why I had plenty of time to take pictures.

It doesn't look half bad like that but it was more fun about 20 min before this picture was taken. I caught my one and only wave of the day. It was probably a little over head, I dropped in made my bottom turn and started down the line. It was fast and fun. Then the wave walled up all the way down in front of me. I tried to turn to get out in front of the wave but either because I've been out of the water for 6 months or I wasn't fast enough and I got sucked up and over. It was no big deal and seemed like a pretty tame wipe out. Apparently my board wasn't as lucky as me. I can't complain after all the fun I've had on it for the past 5 years.

On the bright side my 9'2" will fit inside my Mini now -:]

Sunset Surf in The Sunset

It was warmer than most the two warm summer days we get a year today and you can see how hot the sun was.

I wish I could have been sitting out there waiting for one more wave.

New Binocular Mount

I got a binocular mount for my point and shoot digital camera(s). This is the first test and it seems to be working pretty good.

Shaky Sunday Afternoon

I was in a bit of a rush Sunday and didn't setup a tripod or stereo rig. But I did manage to shoot some hand held footage of some decent sized waves from my roof here at OB. I tried to stabilize the video a little in post but it only worked on a few shots. I guess because I was having problems with my new lens extender. I think it actually looks kind of fun though.

Knee Surgery and Work

I tore my ACL had surgery and have been recovering for the last 4 months and have a few months to go. Here is a cool video of them drilling holes in my bone, putting a new ACL in and a screw to hold it in place. I hope she holds.

It's amazing of fast your leg shrinks when you don't use it. Here is what happened after about a week off my leg. IN 3D!

On top of that the movie I have been working on has had me working 12 hour days 6 days a week (well only 10 hrs on Saturdays) for the past two months with physicaltherapy for my knee. What fun!

It all made me to lazy to post anything here. But the movie is winding down, my knee is way better and I'm ready to catch up on the last 3 or 4 months of posting I have meant to do.

Gray Saturday Afternoon

I heard the surf at Kelly Ave went off this morning and was in the double over head range with big hollow barrels breaking in 4 feet of water. My friend who surfed it said it was intense. Or did he say scary? I have been out of the water for a few months and only 2 or 3 days before that since Christmas so I played it safe. I hit a beach with some fun waist to head high waves and had a few hours of fun then went in to work. Saturday afternoon the fog rolled in. When I got home this is what it looked like at OB. Not to inviting unless you were out to catch some dinner. I went and got some pizza.

It's been a while

I think it's been almost 2 months since I've been in the water -:[ Long story short a decent swell hit this week and I managed to get out 4 times and take a few pictures on Friday.

And what a nice Friday it turned out to be. Check out the Sunrise at Kelly Ave. In Half Moon Bay. Oh, and see that point of land in the upper right? That's the north end of Half Moon Bay and about 1/4 mile out from the tip is Mavericks -:] It looks so peaceful from here. Well it probably is since I think it needs to be close to triple over head before it starts breaking and it was only just a bit over head Friday.

I only managed one wave before I was worn out (what? I've been out of the water 2 months) and had to head in to work. I took a few more pictures before heading out. Check out the guy in the yellow helmet getting ready.

On my way back home to rinse off I stopped at another good break and shot this guy dropping in to a decent sized wave. I wish I could have stayed longer and got more shots because this wave was at least a few feet smaller than some of the others I saw the guys out just miss. But I was late for work and had to role.

Not to much going on

So the surf hasn't been all that sweet looking and I haven't made it out a whole lot since my last posts. And with the less than spectacular waves I haven't been taking any pictures. But I hope that will change soon at least as far as having pictures to post. I just ordered some new video cameras to strap to my head and paddle out with. Here's hoping they are water proof enough and sync good so I can put up some first person stereo 3d surf images!

Finally! I had to do a lot of work to reduce the shake from using full zoom and zoom extenders on my 3d rig. I have found a bunch of little things to fix with my long distance 3d rig but even what I have now seems to work okay. This video still has some problems I'm trying to work out but it's the best 3d Maverick's footage I have shot to date. Maybe at some point I'll post some of my older Mavericks footage for comparison. Enjoy -:]

Cleaning up my Mavericks video

So I was up late trying to figure out the best way to reduce the shake and improve the stereo 3d quality of all the Mavericks video I shot yesterday. I think I have finally come up with the solution. Take a look at this shot then compare it the the same shot I put up before deshaking at the end of yesterdays post.

Santa dropped some waves off this morning -:]

Here is the spot I tried to hit yesterday, looking a bit better today. I managed to get a few Xmas waves. Then I got out and took a few pictures.

Mavericks had a little bit of action going on today. Looks like it may go off a couple more times this week and possibly get bigger if things line up right. I have a few more minutes of footage of Mavericks from today that I'm trying to edit together and get up loaded. All in all Santa was very nice to us Nor-Cal surfers today!

Surf Sucked This Morning

Met up with a friend for dawn patrol this morning to find everything all blown out. Really strong on shore winds and the only protected spot was almost flat -:\ So I came home and decided to try putting a video I shot last month up. This was shot from the roof of my apartment. I had gone skateboarding that morning for the 2nd or 3rd day in a row and had come home really tired and kind of beat up. I came over the last hill and saw this stuff going off. I was so tired and beat up from skating I knew there was almost no point in me trying to paddle out so I grabbed my stereo 3D video rig and climbed onto our roof and shot about 20min of video. This is what I got. Make sure to get out some red/blue (red over the left eye) 3d glasses because everything is better in 3D!

I've lived across the street from the beach here at Ocean Beach in San Francisco for just over 4 years now and after looking at a few pictures I took today and I decided it was time to start a Surf blog. I don't actually surf at O.B. that often because it's usually above my skill level but if it's around head high or less I can manage it if I'm not to busy being lazy. I was lazy today but I did take a couple of pictures. There were some bigger waves than these rolling through but I didn't get pictures of the guys getting barreled. Maybe next time.

I really should have grabbed my board and paddled out.
